All the cheering didn't help - in front of Queen Mary's eyes, the Danish national handball team lost in the European Championship final against France.
King Frederik did not travel to Cologne.
Cologne – It is actually a tradition in Denmark that the new regent and his wife first visit the neighboring countries Sweden and Norway.
But then King Frederik (55) and Queen Mary (51) got in the way of the European Handball Championships.
The Danish national team reached the final and was able to enjoy royal support.
Denmark's handball players lose the European Championship final despite support from Queen Mary
King Frederik is considered a sports enthusiast and he even met his Mary during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
But Queen Mary appeared at the final of the European Handball Championships without Frederik.
The native Australian was accompanied by her private secretary Henriette Ellermann-Kingombe, as
Billed Bladed
reports.
Instead of King Frederik, Hendrik Wüst (48), Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (68) took a seat next to Denmark's new queen.
The palace posted a photo on
of Queen Mary at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, showing a smiling Mary "shortly before the start of the second half."
With Gucci glasses and a fitted, wine-red blazer from Alexander McQueen, Mary was clearly on the winning path in terms of fashion - but unfortunately her effort didn't bring anything to the Danish team in the end.
In the end, Denmark narrowly lost to France 31:33.
King Frederik travels to Poland – Queen Mary surprises with a visit to Cologne
Why King Frederik did not accompany his wife could be due to his planned trip to Poland.
From January 31st to February 2nd, the newly crowned monarch will lead a Danish business delegation to Warsaw, which, according to
kongehuset.dk,
will also include Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (59), Lars Aagaard (56), Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, and Jacob Jensen (50), Minister for Food, Agriculture and Supply.

Maybe it was a small consolation for the handball professionals to receive the silver medal from Queen Mary after losing the European Championship final.
However, Mary and Frederik both missed the semi-final, in which Denmark knocked hosts Germany out of the tournament, and, according to
Se og Hør
, preferred to attend a performance of the play “Indenfor Murene” (English: “Within the Walls”) at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen.
Shortly before, there had been a secret show of love between Queen Mary and King Frederik in the church.
