Unaccompanied minors: the diocese of Nice renounces the sale of two villas in the Alpes-Maritimes department

Highlights: The community remains the tenant of the buildings and will therefore continue to take care of unaccompanied minors there, as it has done since 2017. It will not, however, be able to carry out expansions to increase the reception capacity. At the department's plenary session on October 13, the purchase of the villas was approved for a whopping 2.2 million euros. “The bishop finally had the courage to make this decision, even if it meant opposing his close advisors,” says Jacques, relieved.

Le Figaro Nice

On November 15, the head of the Reconquest list!

in the European elections Marion Maréchal went to Carros, near Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), to denounce the start of a “major local replacement”.

A formula borrowed many times by the president of the party, Éric Zemmour, and symbolized by two villas that the diocese of Nice, owner, was preparing to sell to the departmental council for the reception of unaccompanied minors (UMA).

A situation very badly experienced by some Carrossois who highlighted the rise of a climate of insecurity.

In circumstances that are unknown, the diocese finally changed its mind and is no longer a seller of Maison Notre Dame and Maison Saint-Louis,

Le Figaro

learned on Monday from consistent sources, confirming information from

Nice Matin

.

"Wow !

We didn't think there was still any hope

,” observes Jacques*, one of those who mobilized against this takeover.

Certainly, the transaction was well underway.

At the department's plenary session on October 13, the purchase of the villas was approved for a whopping 2.2 million euros.

“The bishop finally had the courage to make this decision, even if it meant opposing his close advisors

,” says Jacques, relieved.

Contacted, the departmental council specifies that it “

will withdraw, during the meeting of February 9, its acquisition deliberation to remain tenant of the sites.”

Home Optimization

Because although it does not own the walls, the department chaired by Charles Ange Ginésy has been renting the two buildings since 2017, precisely as part of its mandatory child protection mission, which includes the care of unaccompanied minors.

“It’s certain, migrants are remarkably well supported!

I’m not telling you what this must cost the community

,” says a close neighbor.

From 760,000 euros in 2016, the community's budget dedicated to the care of unaccompanied minors has exploded to reach 28 million euros in 2023. In proportion, it must be said, to the significant increase in the flow of MNA on the French-Italian border in recent years.

105% more for example between 2022 and 2023.

Nothing new under the sun, then?

If it does not acquire the villas, the department will continue to welcome migrants there as it has done for seven years now.

“There is still a nuance,”

notes Jacques

.

As a tenant, the department will not be able to carry out land developments, expansions of all kinds... In short, any extension that could allow optimization of the reception of unaccompanied minors.

This is what was to be feared.”

He would prefer that the two buildings be sold to developers.

“There aren’t just devils among them!”

, he quips.

Political coup from the local far right

On the side of the town hall (DVD) of Carros, we denounce a

“political coup carried out by the local extreme right”

.

In the mayor's office, we have a hard time understanding why Eric Zemmour's supporters suddenly woke up last November about this reception center for unaccompanied minors

“even though it has been open since 2017! »

“There is simply no subject.

And even less insecurity.

The gendarmes have confirmed this to us several times

,” maintains a member of the cabinet.

The municipality's bitterness also (and above all) lies in the fact that it had acted as buyer instead of the department and that an agreement in principle had been reached with the community and the diocese.

“This would have allowed the city to be in control of the future of the land

,” we are told.

The fact remains that if the City had purchased the two buildings, it would have continued to rent them to the department, for the same purposes.

“In any case, we could not go very far in analyzing the prospects since the diocese withdrew

,” concludes the same member of the cabinet.
