At the annual general meeting of the Weßling fire department, the active members elected a new commander and a new deputy.

According to outgoing commander Michael Schütz, there were significantly more missions in 2023 than in 2022.

Weßling – There's a lot going on at Weßling's fire department.

In addition to the numerous operations last year, a new commander and a new deputy commander were elected at the annual general meeting on Friday.

A term lasts six years.

Michael Schütz was commander of the Weßling fire department for eight and a half years.

Now he has voluntarily resigned.

“It was an honor and a privilege to be the first commander of the Weßling Volunteer Fire Department,” says the 62-year-old.

Chief firefighter Marius Engel has now been elected as the new commander.

The 32-year-old has been with the fire department for 18 years.

Initially in the Schweinfurt district, in 2018 he moved to Weßling.

There are no concrete plans for the coming period, but he is in constant communication with his colleagues, says Engel when asked by Starnberger Merkur.

The previous deputy commander Peter Heitzer also decided not to take another term after the end of his term of office for family reasons.

He is followed by Jochen Wennemann.

There are two deputy commanders at the Weßling fire department.

That's how Dr.

Korbinian Puchner has been in office for four years.

Engel and Wennemann still have to be confirmed by the local council at the local council meeting on February 27th.

Both of Weßling's fire brigade were elected with an “overwhelming majority,” reports Schütz.

Eventful year for Weßling's fire department

Overall, the people of Weßlinger can look back on an eventful year.

The fire department went out to 353 missions, including first responders.

First responders are the qualified first aiders who are called, among other things, when they can reach the scene of an emergency faster than the emergency services.

If the Firt Responder operations are taken into account, Weßling's fire brigade was deployed 128 times.

In recent years there have been more and more missions in Weßling.

There were 71 in 2021 and 82 in 2022. “We had significantly more missions in 2023.

“That’s a real board,” says Schütz.

This was partly due to the heavy snowfall at the beginning of December, which meant that many sidewalks had to be cleared, for example.

“There were also many accidents on the A 96 towards Munich and Lindau,” reports the outgoing commander Schütz.

“This was due to the torrential rains at the end of the year.

These led to a number of rear-end collisions due to aquaplaning.”

The offspring also did well in 2023.

The 16 members of the youth fire brigade invested 338 hours in eleven exercises alone.

The children's fire brigade with twelve members met for numerous leisure activities, which also covered fire-fighting-related topics.

At the annual general meeting, numerous members were honored for their loyalty or were promoted.
