Another strike in the German transport infrastructure: after the train drivers and the Discover flight crew, it is now the turn of the aviation security forces.

Hamburg - Due to a nationwide warning strike by aviation security forces, all 126 planned departures at Hamburg Airport this Thursday will be “canceled or will take place without passengers”.

The airport company announced this on Tuesday after the Verdi union called for a warning strike for the aviation security forces.

Because of the strike, the central security checkpoint had to remain closed all day on Thursday.

“Arrivals will continue to be possible on Thursday,” it said.

“However, there may be flight cancellations and significant delays throughout the day for arrivals at Hamburg Airport due to the Verdi strike.” All passengers affected by cancellations are asked to contact their airline and not come to the airport.

At Hamburg Airport, 126 departures and 127 arrivals with a total of around 30,000 passengers were originally planned for Thursday.

Because the aviation security forces have also been called on a warning strike at all other major airports, the number of arrivals on Thursday is likely to be significantly reduced.

According to a statement from the United Services Union (Verdi), employees in the aviation security sector who work in passenger screening, people and goods screening, cargo screening and service areas are called upon to strike.

Without them, the security areas at airports cannot be operated.

Air traffic is therefore likely to be paralyzed in large parts of Germany.

The last time there were warning strikes in aviation security was in March last year.

At that time it was about the working conditions of the employees, who had achieved significant wage increases in recent years.

Among other things, the union is demanding more salaries for employees.

So far there has been no agreement in three rounds of negotiations.

Further discussions are planned for next week.

Verdi is negotiating nationwide with the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) on behalf of around 25,000 industry employees.

“Our goal is to sustainably compensate for the employees’ loss of purchasing power,” said Verdi negotiator Wolfgang Pieper, according to the statement.

“The work of the aviation security forces must remain financially attractive so that the urgently needed skilled workers can be recruited and retained.” dpa
