The president rejects the request of Luis Donaldo Colosio's son to pardon Mario Aburto and close the investigation, 30 years after the assassination of the PRI presidential candidate

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, stated this Tuesday that the murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio, almost three decades ago, is a state matter that must be thoroughly clarified.

With this, the president has responded to the request of the son of the murdered PRI candidate, Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, that he grant pardon to the only person detained for the crime, Mario Aburto, and put the “final file” on the investigation.

“I can't do it,” López Obrador said this Tuesday at a press conference.

“I know that he no longer wants, nor does his family, to know anything about this, which was terrible, but it is a matter of State, and I want that, as far as I am concerned, the investigation does not stop.

"I'm not going to shelve a matter like that."

The

Colosio case

has once again been on the front pages of the press after the Attorney General's Office has presented to the judge the theory that Aburto did not act alone, but that there was a conspiracy to murder Colosio and that there was a second shooter. at the scene of the crime, which occurred on March 23, 1994, in the town of Lomas Taurinas, Tijuana (Baja California).

The FGR has accused Jorge Antonio Sánchez Ortega, a former member of Cisen, the Government's intelligence body, who was assigned to the security team of the PRI presidential candidate.

He also accused Genaro García Luna, who was then deputy operational director of Cisen, of covering up Sánchez Ortega.

Although prosecutors requested an arrest warrant for the new defendants, the judge rejected the evidence provided regarding his alleged involvement and denied the request.

López Obrador has stated that Colosio's assassination disrupted the country's political stability.

“No crime should go unpunished, but, when it comes to a case like this, much less so, because we are talking about political stability, about the violence that affects an entire country.

This is a leader, he is a candidate for the presidency of the Republic.

No crime should be allowed, but this is a state matter,” the president insisted.

“Generally, [one of] the maxims in the jargon of power is that state crimes are never clarified, so we should not say now, let's turn the page,” he added.

The renewed push by the Prosecutor's Office in the

Colosio case

has been understood by the opposition as a political move by the Government in a year in which the presidency is at stake in the elections on June 2.

The assassination touches the heart of the PRI, one of the parties of the opposition alliance Fuerza y Corazón por México.

“I am not willing to use such a regrettable situation for political purposes, much less for political purposes, but it is important that there is no impunity if it is a crime that, according to the Prosecutor's Office, has some relationship with an institution of the State [like Cisen],” López Obrador has maintained.
