A prisoner used cutlery to dig through the wall of the prison in Bad Reichenhall.

He piled on a bed sheet.

But the police were quickly on his heels.

Bad Reichenhall - This story is reminiscent of the Stephen King film adaptation

The Convicted

from 1994 with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the main roles.

On February 16th last year, 28-year-old Christian B. (name changed) was taken to the Bad Reichenhall prison.

He had recently been arrested with two accomplices in 35 cases after the theft of grave crosses, grave lanterns, etc. from cemeteries, churches and shops in the Traunstein area.

Prison Break: Cutlery became a tool to break through the wall

During his arrest, files containing child pornographic content were also found on his cell phone.

Now the Ministry of Justice confirms a report in the

Passauer Neue Presse

that the prisoner escaped from prison in a spectacular way on the night of December 17th.

For months during his pre-trial detention in his cell, which was located on the outer wall of the 70-year-old prison building, Christian B. scraped the plaster out of the wall with a knife, fork, spoon and broken toilet paper roll holders - until he managed to get bricks out of the wall on the 1st floor.

He must have done this very carefully so that the plaster on the outside didn't fall off.

When he completed his escape plan, Christian B. pushed in the hole at night, squeezed through the narrow gap and rappelled down the six meters to the ground using a bed sheet.

There is no other fence here, so the prisoner was able to escape to freedom undisturbed.

The police were immediately on the trail of the fugitive

But Christian B. couldn't be happy about this for very long: the very next day he was arrested again near Traunstein.

The hole in the wall was immediately bricked up and plastered.

A bright spot still reminds us of the escape.

But further measures were also taken to ensure that no one follows Christan B's example: "The processes and security measures for additional security at the Bad Reichenhall prison were examined at high speed after the incident and fundamentally revised," explains Ministry of Justice spokeswoman Andrea Leonhardt.

“This means that prisoners will no longer be housed in cells on the outer wall.”

Christian B. was taken to the correctional facility in Munich-Stadelheim.

Here he is unlikely to be able to scratch his way through the wall given the concrete wall surrounding the prison.

He also has to expect cell arrest.

And an investigation was initiated “due to damaging property that was harmful to the public.”

Leonhardt: “The escape itself is not criminalized by the criminal code.” She also emphasizes that escapes from enclosed prisons are “the absolute exception” in the Bavarian penal system.

There had been no breakout in Bad Reichenhall prison for 20 years, not even an attempt at it.

According to prison director Jürgen Burghardt, the prison in Bad Reichenhall is responsible for pre-trial detention of adult male prisoners from the Laufen district court.

“Due to the outbreak, two detention rooms there are currently not occupied by prisoners,” explains Burghardt.

“This does not result in any capacity problems.”
