Last week, a WHO report noted an alarming explosion in measles cases in the European region.
Between January and October 2023, more than 30,000 cases were reported by 40 countries in this region, i.e. thirty times more than in 2022. A dizzying increase which worries specialists.
In this context, is a resurgence of measles to be feared in France?
This highly contagious viral disease is caused by
Morbillivirus
(measles virus), which is one of the RNA viruses.
It is spread primarily through droplets released by infected people when they cough or sneeze, usually 10 to 12 days after the date of infection.
The first symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose or irritation around the eyes.
The characteristic skin rashes appear three to four days later, first on the face then gradually down to the feet.
