Doctors across Germany will go on warning strike on Tuesday (January 30th).

They demand more wages or the quality of medical care threatens to decline.

Munich/Regensburg – Numerous doctors at German university hospitals are going on strike on Tuesday, January 30th, for better working conditions and fair pay.

In Bavaria alone, the Marburger Bund doctors' union, which called for the strike, estimates that around 2,000 doctors are taking part in the strike.

The result: Regular operations will not take place at many university hospitals, operations have been postponed and appointments cancelled.

Only emergency care should take place.

As BR24 reports, the university hospitals in Würzburg, Erlangen, Regensburg and Augsburg are affected, as are the LMU, TU and the German Heart Center in Munich.

Doctors' union: Skilled labor shortage is exacerbated by wage gaps

The demand for better remuneration for doctors at German university hospitals is no coincidence.

For the same work, a doctor at a university clinic earns less than at a municipal clinic.

The second chairman of the Marburger Bund, Dr.

Andreas Botzlar sees this as a dangerous development.

“University hospitals used to be able to rely on recruiting enough young people to provide highly specialized care for seriously ill patients.

This is becoming increasingly difficult,” he said in a press release.

“The triple burden of health care, research and teaching that doctors often have to bear is not given the appreciation it deserves.” As a result, well-trained specialists are increasingly leaving.

The Marburger Bund is therefore demanding higher surcharges for regular work at night, on weekends and public holidays, as well as a linear 12.5 percent increase in salary based on a year.

But so far the employers' association, the Collective Bargaining Association of German States (TdL), has not agreed to these demands.

Negotiations have already been unsuccessful twice.

Employers' association willing to compromise: “Appreciation should also be expressed in money”

As the TdL negotiator, Monika Heinold, told the editorial team when asked, they were definitely willing to compromise.

Although we don't want to comment on the details, "the fact remains that our appreciation for the work of the doctors at the university hospitals should also be expressed in money." The aim is to continue to provide medical professionals with an attractive and up-to-date system as university hospitals to be an employer.

“I am counting on us to find a solution that is acceptable to both sides at the end of February,” says Heinold.
