There was no coffee or cake for Martin Sellner in the Passau Café Greindl.

The innkeeper closed his restaurant.

Today it opens again - with mixed feelings.

We spoke with him.

Passau – “We opened again today, we can’t close it for another day,” says Stephan Greindl on the phone.

The owner of the Passau Café Greindl has had a turbulent start to the week after the right-wing extremist and head of the Identitarian Movement, Martin Sellner, chose Greindl's restaurant for a PR campaign.

A day later, Stephan Greindl is back in his café.

He made his point clear in a video on social media.

“Our products are colorful, just like the people in this world,” he says.

After secret meetings in Potsdam: Martin Sellner under surveillance by the Federal Police

Sellner had announced that he wanted to eat coffee and cake in Café Greindl, even though he was said to have been undercover in Germany and was being considered for an entry ban against him “for reasons of public order, security or health”.

Sellner was part of the secret meeting in Potsdam, which the research center “Correctiv” reported on.

Sellner is said to have suggested, among other things, deporting dual nationals who were not sufficiently “assimilated” to North Africa.

Since the meeting became known, thousands of people across Germany have taken to the streets against the AfD and right-wing extremism.

He was checked by the police at the border with Bavaria.

However, the police found no reasons “that indicate that he represents a threat to public safety and order,” as Police Chief Inspector Jürgen Bockstedt of the Passau Federal Police was

quoted by the

Bayern media group .

That's why Sellner was allowed to enter.

Passauer Wirt does not engage in dialogue with supporters - and also receives a lot of encouragement

He was unable to visit Café Greindl on Monday.

Boss Stephan Greindl had closed his café.

He was then showered with insults and defamation from Sellner supporters.

He doesn't get involved in a dialogue with the authors: "That's not good for me either."

(By the way: Our Bayern newsletter informs you daily about all the important stories from Bavaria.)

Instead, he posted a video message on Instagram.

In it he emphasizes that Sellner's attitude is not his own: "I want to resist extremely, it is repugnant to me and I would like to distance myself from it." Many comments are collected under the post.

First, a lot of criticism of Greindl.

The positive comments now predominate and Greindl is pleased with the approval.

“Mega strong statement!”, “Thank you for your courage!” and “Thank you for the campaign, Sellner wouldn’t be welcome in my café either” are just some of the reactions that can be read under the post.

Today, Tuesday, January 30th, Stephan Greindl reopened his café.

His team sells coffee, cakes, tarts and chocolates.

Greindl is still on guard: “If we recognize him, we won’t let him in.

If he still came in, it would be a triumph for him.” Together with his team, he tries to start the day positively: “We’ll see what happens.”
