Road accidents have fallen by 21% in the two weeks since Bologna introduced its controversial 30 kph speed limit which the government is seeking to overturn, the Emilian capital's city council said Tuesday.


   According to the City Council, compared to the same period in 2023, there were 25 fewer accidents, 14 fewer accidents within injuries and one fatality and 27.3% fewer pedestrians involved.


   Between Monday 15 and Sunday 28 January (the penalties were triggered on Tuesday 16), 94 accidents occurred on the roads of Bologna, 63 of which with injuries and 31 without injuries, no fatalities.


   From Monday 16 to Sunday 29 January 2023, there had been 119 accidents, of which 77 with injuries, 41 without and one fatal.


   That is -18.2 per cent accidents with injuries, -24.4 per cent without.


   "We must consolidate this initial positive trend," said citycouncil sources.
