Patience is still needed - but the anticipation of planting on the balcony in spring is increasing.
What you should consider when planning.
It is quite mild during the day.
But hobby gardeners should also think about the frosty nights or cold rain when, looking ahead to spring, they ask themselves how they can beautify their balcony or terrace with the first early bloomers.
A lot of patience is required until the ice saints are over and for many primrose varieties it is still too early to plant them in the ground when the temperatures are below zero, just as it is for frost-sensitive daisies or forget-me-nots.
Which flowers on the balcony can tolerate frost?
It's a little easier with many perennials and flower bulbs.
Crocuses, for example, are among the first early bloomers.
Daffodils and horned violets are also considered comparatively robust.
If you want to design your balcony boxes with tulips or daffodils, you should put the flower bulbs in the pots in autumn, according to one of the tips according to
MDR Garten
.
Although they bloom a little later in spring, they are cold-resistant.
Early bloomers need frost protection
If you really want to have primroses, tulips, daffodils, violets and other early bloomers on your balcony in spring, you can also buy pre-grown potted plants.
For these plants, gardeners would simulate the weather conditions that the early bloomers would need to sprout, the German Press Agency reported on the subject.
But the plants are used to the warmth of the greenhouse.
On the other hand, it can still be frosty on the balcony or terrace in spring.
That's why outdoor plants need to be protected during a cold snap, according to the advice of the Bavarian Garden Academy, according to the report: If the temperatures are below zero, you should temporarily bring the pots back into the house or cover them with a multi-layer fleece or newspaper.

Temporarily bring in early bloomers in the pot
However, the early bloomers in the pot don't like it too warm indoors.
It is better to put them in a cooler room or, in the transitional period, for example in a covered area in the entrance to the house, where they are a little more protected.
If it goes towards plus temperatures again, you can put the flowers back out on the balcony.
