Centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein answered a question on teaming up with the opposition left wing populist 5-Star Movement (M5S) ahead of regional elections in Italy this year by saying, in English, "the sooner the better".
The PD and the M5S are the biggest opposition, polling respectively at around 19% and 15.5% parties in recent polls.
The left's failure to form a coalition was a major factor in the Giorgia Meloni led rightwing win in the last general election in September 2022.
M5S leader and former prime minister Giuseppe Conte has said his party canally with the PF on specific issues and in specific areas butnot form an organic alliance.
Italy's two biggest centrist parties, Azione and Italia Viva, are also loth to join any center left alliance.
