Strelitzias are impressive and exotic beauties, whose large leaves as well as the bright flowers are the focus.

But what can you do if the leaves tear?

The Strelitzia, also known as the Bird of Paradise flower, impresses with its large, exotic flowers.

But the large, characteristic leaves are also the focus of the plant.

If they tear, your first impulse is to grab secateurs or try to remove the defect in some other way.

But what exactly should you do then?

With a size of up to two meters, the Strelitzia is a real eye-catcher.

It not only attracts attention with its jagged, orange flowers, but also with its evergreen leaves.

However, these often tear.

Then note the following:

  • Strelitzia leaves tend to tear.

This happens often, especially when growing, and is difficult to influence.

  • Cracks mainly occur because there is high tension in the sheet.

Then the leaf bulges and, depending on the circumstances, can tear.

  • Cracks in the leaf generally do not harm the plant.

  • You should not cut the area off, as this usually damages the plant.

Only with older plants can you thin out individual, entire leaves so that the Strelitzia gets enough light and air again.

Older specimens in particular tend to have torn leaves.

If the plant is still in an unprotected place outdoors (rare in this country), leaves can also be affected by precipitation and wind.

So consider the location first.

Does your Strelitzia have curled leaves?

This is a sure sign that the plant needs more water.

Brown leaves, on the other hand, often indicate overwatering.
