Cessation of activity:

The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Eli Cohen, announced today (Tuesday) the decision to cease electricity production at the Reading power plant.

This is a two-part outline for achieving energy security in Gush Dan based on energy storage instead of the existing gas turbines at the station.

The decision is expected to reduce air pollution and bring many benefits to the electricity sector and the environment.

"This is historic news."

Minister Cohen said, "We are making electricity production in Israel more efficient and cleaner and returning the coast to the residents. In the Reading area, we will build storage facilities and a reception point for an underwater cable that will connect us to Europe. We will use the space that will be freed up to increase investments and lower the electricity rate."

The Ministry of Environmental Protection welcomed the decision that they said was led by them.

"The meaning of the decision is the promotion of the storage solution and the prevention of air pollution in a dense urban area. In addition, according to them, the decision will allow for an improvement in energy security in Gush Dan and for saving electricity," they said.

The Ministry will also continue to promote the second part of the plan - the establishment of solar energy production facilities all over the Dan block to further increase energy security, especially in times of emergency, and to reduce the production of electricity from power plants outside it.

The ministry also said that the decision is a necessary step to significantly expand the supply of storage and renewable energy in all urban areas in Israel, as part of Israel's strategic climate goals to move to a zero-emissions economy by 2050.

In response to the Ministry of Environmental Protection's announcement, the Ministry of Energy stated: "The great news of the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure this morning regarding the cessation of electricity production at the Reading power plant in Tel Aviv was led by them is a complete "fake". The decision to stop electricity production in Reading is the result of professional staff work led by the Ministry of Energy and the infrastructures, for over a year, in cooperation with the relevant bodies in the electricity sector, long before the Ministry of Environmental Protection published its work in question about a month ago."

They also added that the decision to stop production in Reading does not depend on the establishment of storage and does not stem from the attempts to decentralize electricity production in Gush Dan.
