In the Ebersberg district, the great tit pushes the tree sparrow out of first place in the “Hour of Winter Birds”.
Rare birds were also spotted during the LBV campaign.
District - Over 600,000 feathered guests counted several thousand participants in almost 20,000 gardens as part of the “Hour of Winter Birds 2024” from January 5th to 7th.
In the Ebersberg district, 395 bird lovers counted a total of 9,327 birdwatchers in 302 gardens.
That is significantly more than last year.
At that time, only 5,237 feathered creatures were reported in the region during the campaign by the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV).
Rare bird species also visit the Ebersberger Land in winter
In addition to the usual winter guests, such as blackbirds, magpies and the like, rare guests also appeared in the district on the first weekend in January: the black redstart was spotted four times and the blackcap seven times.
According to the LBV, both species usually overwinter in North Africa and are rarely seen here in winter.
According to the LBV, however, it is now known that the small migratory bird can be found here more and more often all year round.
This also applies to peregrine falcons and great egrets, which are visiting the Ebersberger Land again.
The great tit is the most frequently seen feathered companion in the Ebersberg district
In terms of the total number of birds counted, the great tit pushed the tree sparrow out of first place this year.
With 1,388 specimens spotted, the tit species with the black and white head and striking yellow breast increased by 16 percent and was seen in almost 90 percent of gardens.
According to LBV, this is probably because many great tits come to us from the north in colder weather.
Young birds in particular make their way south.
In second place is the house sparrow (1,280 sightings with an increase of 36 percent) and in third place is the tree sparrow (1,240 specimens with a decrease of two percent).
The next LBV bird count will be in March 2024
The next bird count will take place from March 9th to 12th.
Then the LBV and its nationwide partner NABU call on people to record the breeding birds in their gardens during the “Hour of the Garden Birds”.
Schools are also invited to count diligently.
