The hunting season ends on 31 January due to accidents and poaching. In just one year, two European procedures were opened due to unconstitutional laws, while almost 600 animals were victims of hunting and arrived at the WWF recovery center in Valpredina (Bergamo) between September and December 2023. This is, in short, the picture outlined by WWF Italy, a "depressing budget destined to worsen after the weakening of ISPRA and obstacles to the associations' appeals".
The environmentalist association criticizes the "repeated attempts to distort the legislation on hunting, to the full advantage of poachers and poachers and in contempt of the Constitution, Europe and citizens (fauna is an asset unavailable to the State, not a commodity of exchange at the disposal of a handful of shooters and their political leaders)".
"While Europe is asking for greater controls and effective sanctions, politics has been committed for months to eliminating every measure for the protection of wild animals - observes the WWF - after having weakened Ispra, entrusting the role of expressing scientific opinions to a political body, and having modified the code of administrative process to prevent judges from suspending hunting even in the most urgent cases, it is now ready to approve a bill that opens hunting 7 days a week and eliminates the most important sanctions against poachers. Hunting continues to represent a danger to public safety " he adds.
Even in the season that is about to end, "there are dozens of people injured or dead due to gunfire", states the WWF according to which "eliminating the weak existing sanctions does not mean defending hunters but only encouraging criminals, such as poachers and traffickers, to violate the law in the awareness of not risking anything".
