In the future, the “last generation” no longer wants to stick together – but new structural problems are troubling the climate group.

Berlin - The so-called climate stickers have had to share media attention for creative forms of protest for some time now - be it with the farmers' protests and the demos against the right.

The “Last Generation” group quickly expressed solidarity with the other protesters and from then on appeared together with them.

At the beginning of this week the bombshell burst: there will no longer be any sticking activities on the streets in the future.

While many drivers should breathe a sigh of relief immediately, the former climate stickers have a problem: they now have to fight for regular attention with other actions.

The activists also have to reorganize themselves structurally - because the number of volunteers is dwindling.

“Last Generation” complains about the lack of volunteers – “There aren’t enough coming”

Lars Werner, a member of the group’s strategy team, confirmed this to “

Spiegel

”.

“If enough new people had continued to come in so that others could take a break, we would have said: We will continue on this path,” says Werner.

Costly lawsuits and hostile attacks from disgruntled drivers are deterring Last Generation supporters.

“After blockades, some people said: That was right, but I can’t do it again straight away.” A sobering realization for a group that couldn’t exist in its current form without volunteers.

Many of the previous colleagues are busy with legal disputes.

Some want to wait and see how high the fine will be or whether the activists will even face prison.

The airport and Lufthansa send climate stickers the bill: almost a million euros in damage

The financial demands on members of the “last generation” are considerable.

Only recently did Hamburg Airport formulate its demands for a storming of the runway on July 13, 2023: At that time, activists in the Hanseatic city cut through the airport fence and interrupted flight operations.

Hamburg Airport now wants to see 150,000 euros for this.

“These are the costs that can be attributed one to one,” said managing director Christian Kunsch to the dpa news agency.

The total includes the repair costs for the fence and the runway as well as the lost fees for take-offs and landings.

Lufthansa had already announced claims for damages from its subsidiary Eurowings in December.

The group estimated a bill of 740,000 euros in connection with the disruptive actions of the “Last Generation” in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Berlin.

This apparently also calls into question the financial existence of the “last generation”.

“Last Generation” is now planning actions “in critical places” – and the work is continuing in Austria

With the new strategy of avoiding gluing in the future, the heads of the “last generation” are hoping for new popularity.

Lina Johnsen, spokeswoman for the “Last Generation”, told

t-online

that they wanted to

offer even more opportunities to take part in the resistance against the status quo 'business as usual' in addition to a normal life, in addition to work, family .” There will continue to be protests that will not be announced.

“They should take place in critical places where injustices are clearly visible,” said Johnsen.

By the way: In neighboring Austria, the climate adhesives want to continue to live up to their name.

Contrary to the German strategy, the “Last Generation” in Austria says: “We will continue with the sticking actions and combine them with other forms of protest,” says spokeswoman Marina Hagen-Canaval.
