The feeling that 2023 had particularly many hot days and hours of sunshine for the people of Munich is certainly not deceptive: According to the Statistical Office of the City of Munich, the year 2023 had the highest average temperature overall since records began in 1955, at 11.6 degrees Celsius It is at the top on most hot days with 30 degrees or higher and on the fewest frost days - but it just misses the top ranks.

Heat year 2023 in Munich: First place in sunshine hours narrowly missed

“Although we are not climate experts, we do notice in the data that the values ​​are 'too warm' much more often than 'too cold' and that we regularly record records in terms of heat and heat,” writes the Statistical Office Office at the request of our editorial team.

The year 2023 also ranks sixth for the most hours of sunshine (fittingly exactly 2023 hours), the record is held by the year 2022 with 2279 hours.

For the most hot days with a maximum temperature of 30 degrees or more, last year took third place with 25 days, only surpassed by the years 2003 (31 days) and 2015 (33 days).

On average, 2023 was a particularly warm year with many days with at least 30 degrees in Munich.

In 2023 there were particularly few ice and frost days in Munich

“At the same time, there were also negative records in the cold criteria, for example a particularly low number of ice days,” says the Statistical Office.

Last year, too, there were particularly few frost days (daily minimum below 0 degrees) and ice days (daily maximum below 0 degrees) - in both categories, 2023 takes 7th place (57 frost days, 9 ice days).

The fewest frost days since 1955 were in 2014 (32 in total), and the fewest frost days were in 2020 (0).

Only the amount of precipitation in 2023 was within the normal range: with a total of 1,013 millimeters of rain and snow, the values ​​have been in the upper midfield since 1955. In the long-term comparison period between 1991 and 2020, the amount of precipitation averaged 939.7 millimeters - so 2023 was a better one in this regard wet year.

However, the Munich Statistical Office points out that the amount of precipitation varies greatly from year to year.
