There is a school in Italy where artificial intelligence is studied.
It is the "Marconi Pieralisi" higher education institute in Jesi, in the province of Ancona, which has introduced on an experimental basis, the first in the Marche and one of the few at a national level, the "Artificial Intelligence" discipline within the Information Technology and Telecommunications curriculum.
The new teaching appears in the lesson timetable while in the few cases in Italy of schools where it is contemplated, it is tackled as a simple project on a voluntary basis.
"The discipline was introduced - explains the coordinator of the Department of Computer Science, Marcello Pigini - in the fourth and fifth grades for one hour a week. The aim of the proposal is to provide students with more specific and advanced preparation on emerging technologies and their applications
. AI - he recalls - represents a discipline that is increasingly in demand in the world of work also in our territory, and in recent years it has acquired an increasingly stronger identity, which is why we thought of introducing it as a discipline in its own right.
We therefore intend to offer students the possibility significantly broaden their cultural background and future career opportunities".
The topic of satisfaction with artificial intelligence in schools was also addressed by a survey carried out by Swg on a sample of 600 Italian teachers, presented by the trade union Gilda.
The survey shows that artificial intelligence divides teachers: 52%, especially among those over 55, are against its use while 48% - mostly under 35 - are in favor.
Most teachers consider AI useful for school bureaucracy (44%) such as for absences, grades or correction of tests;
for teaching programs and materials (41%);
for teacher training (37%).
for 47% of teachers there are more risks than opportunities regarding classroom teaching.
For 29%, however, AI is a threat: among high school teachers there are the greatest concerns.
