(by Silvia Mosca) "Sarà Why Ti Amo" by Ricchi e Poveri, "Felicità" by Al Bano and Romina Power, but also "We will rock you" by Queen, "Italodisco" by Kolors, "Believer" by Imagine Dragons: These are some of the very famous songs that Angelo Ottaviani, a musician from Sulmona, has his 200 middle school students play with an unusual instrument for the curricular discipline: the ukulele, which he introduced in place of the guitar and recorder, usually offered.
Hawaiian guitar with 4 strings instead of 6, with a high sound, the ukulele, which Rino Gaetano brought to the Sanremo stage with "Gianna", is becoming very popular among Ottaviani's kids and colleagues also through his clear and immediate videos released on his YouTube channel , which has 189 thousand subscribers and 1142 publications: "The most viewed guitar teaching channel in Italy: in fact it records around 70 million views", reveals Ottaviani.
Today, from home in Sulmona, through his YouTube channel he reaches students and beginners all over the world and receives comments of appreciation for the revolution in music teaching characterized by clarity and simplification of the method and for the introduction of a an under-inflated instrument like the ukulele, which is Ottaviani's bet.
"As a guitarist, I chose to adopt the ukulele in schools because I find it the most inclusive instrument of all: small, comfortable, inexpensive, it can be played in different ways, both melodic and harmonic, with just a few notions you can make a song and also accompanies the singing, it allows me to exploit the potential of every child, to leave no one behind", adds the 50-year-old musician regarding his experiment, which started a year and a half ago in the Capograssi middle school in the town of Ovidio.
"Musical education, beyond simply making music known, unlike other school subjects can unlock and improve other skills and potential of children, it can help them - concludes Ottaviani - to develop self-esteem and creativity to be invested not necessarily in music itself but also in other subjects and in general in school and in life".
