Utting - This season only, Rupert Riedel, as the tenant of the Uttinger lido, is responsible for maintenance, lifeguarding and catering.

His voluntary retirement after 34 years puts the community under pressure.

The community not only has to look for a new tenant, but also has to think about a long-overdue comprehensive update of the pool after almost nothing has changed for decades.

In order to be able to present concrete facts about the planning progress to the local council in the future, a lido working group was formed at the most recent meeting.

It includes Mayor Florian Hoffmann, Dr.

Nikolaus Högenauer and Nicole von Thülen (both GAL), Ralf Stief and Karl Wilhelm (both CSU), Matthias Hornsteiner (LW) and Florian Hansch (SPD).

A monument bath

For the Uttingers, their beloved beach resort is a sacred cow.

It is one of the few outdoor swimming pools built in the 1920s that have almost retained their historic buildings.

The changing rooms and the old kiosk in the south are even listed buildings.

The diving tower is the landmark of Utting and the entire Ammersee region.

Generations of Uttingers have learned to swim here, spent their summers and wax lyrical when they talk about the “good old days”.

The mouthpiece of the fans is the “Strandbad-Freunde”, a looser but quite active group that wants to make the value of the beach visible.

The friends made headlines when they described the weather and sun protection installed by the tenant eight years ago as a “monster awning” and fought vehemently for its dismantling.

In vain, because the awning is still up.

Since they want to sell Rupert Riedel to the community after the end of the 2024 season at his then purchase price of 40,000 euros, the lido friends spoke up: “It cannot make commercial sense to buy an old awning at the cost price because the material is durable UV radiation only has a limited lifespan.” As an alternative, as before, they suggest new storm-proof umbrellas that are more in keeping with the character of a beach resort “with a bit of gastronomy”.

Larger lawn

Because they don't like the continuous increase in the number of places in the lido beer garden to around 100 either.

They advocate a reduction of twenty percent and thus an increase in the size of the lawn.

The current barbecue hut near the beer garden should also be dismantled.

The friends are skeptical about the realignment of the catering industry that has already been presented to the local council by consultant Bettina von Massenbach: “Adapting the menu to the current size of the kitchen makes more sense than adjusting the size of the kitchen to a menu that is too large.”

In their opinion, the proposed offer, including vegan and vegetarian options, sounded more like top-class gastronomy than an upscale outdoor pool kiosk.

In the long term, however, an upgrade of the wooden and over 40-year-old “Blue House” including the kitchen to meet the requirements of a restaurant permit is essential for lido fans, as is the renewal of toilets and sanitary facilities.

However, it is not necessary to expand the catering industry in order to make the lido more attractive for tenants.

Rather, the catering industry should be reduced in size moderately and thus the investment costs should be kept lower.

“Anniversary kitchen”

However, the lido friends recommend “maintaining the status quo” first.

Accordingly, the new tenant should take over the lido as it is.

However, with new umbrellas instead of the awning.

During the autumn-winter breaks between three seasons, the “Blue House” could be demolished, rebuilt and equipped with a contemporary kitchen.

Completion by 2029 at the latest for the 100th anniversary of the lido.

This option would give the community enough time to comprehensively plan and implement a long-term solution.

The circle of friends also thinks about the lifeguards from May to September.

The Ammersee community could employ its own lifeguards or delegate the task to the tenant, as was the case with Rupert Riedel.

Free access to the lido even outside opening hours is particularly important, emphasized Alexander Behnke on behalf of the lido friends.

Because even in winter and spring, the people of Uttingen come to sunbathe as soon as the first rays shine from the clouds.
