The number of active users on social networks has crossed the threshold of five billion people in 2023, or 62.3% of the world population, according to an annual report published Wednesday.
In July, this percentage stood at 60.6%.
The number of social users thus increased by 5.6% in one year over the past year, when the world population grew by 0.9%, specifies this report published by the agency We are social and the company Meltwater, based on estimates from Kepios, a firm specializing in the study of digital uses.
For comparison, 5.35 billion people have an Internet connection.
The leading social network in terms of audience, Facebook (Meta group), which celebrates its 20th anniversary on Sunday, has a total of 2.19 billion users.
It is ahead of Instagram (1.65 billion), which is closely followed by TikTok (1.56 billion).
2 hours and 23 minutes per day on average
The typical social media user now spends 2 hours and 23 minutes per day on their social platforms of choice, with activities ranging from shopping and connecting to entertainment and finding information about brands.
The report, however, recognizes a certain imprecision due in particular to automated accounts or people registered under different identities.
