On February 2nd there will be significant restrictions on garbage collection and recycling centers in Munich.

The reason: A strike by AWM employees.

Munich - One strike is currently following the next: on Friday, February 2nd, garbage collectors, recycling centers and workshops in Munich will stop work.

Ver.di has called on the employees of the Munich waste management company (AWM) to go on an all-day strike.

This emerges from a press release from the union.

The background to the strike is a conflict with the Bavarian Municipal Employers' Association (KAV).

In spring 2023, in the collective bargaining round for the public sector, the KAV rejected the continuation of the collective agreement regulating flexible working hours for older employees.

This means that municipal employees no longer have the option of taking part-time retirement.

The union responded by demanding negotiations, which the KAV rejected.

Verdi strike by garbage collection and recycling centers in Munich

Heinrich Birner, Managing Director of ver.di in Munich, comments on the strike as follows: “The hard physical strain means that many employees are unable to do their job until the regular start of retirement.

For them, a partial retirement scheme is the great glimmer of hope that they will be able to make the transition to retirement without having to apply for unemployment benefit and then citizen’s benefit.”

On Friday the strikers will meet from 7 a.m. in the Kolpinghaus, Adolf-Kolping-Str.

1 (Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt) and march together in a demonstration to Stachus.

A rally will take place there from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The strike will cause disruption to garbage collection, recycling centers and the AWM workshops throughout the day.
