– Voluntarily going to school for three hours after class to learn?
For 25 students who are supported by the Startchance Foundation at the Karl Lederer Middle School, this is no question.
Some have been coming for many years.
“We, students and coaches, have now become like a family,” says Barbara Freitag, who recently took over leadership of the group.
“Every child deserves their chance” is the credo
Prof. Dr.
Wulf von Schimmelmann from Berg founded the foundation.
“Every child deserves their chance,” is his credo.
The foundation wants to help improve the future prospects of children and young people - regardless of their origin or social background.

Barbara Freitag already knows the structure of the school
“After we founded it many years ago, our headmaster Florian Kropius asked me if I wanted to join in,” reports Friday, now 45 years old.
At that time, she was initially a teaching assistant at the Karl Lederer primary school (which also has a Startchance group), then moved to the middle school, where she was involved, among other things, in the open all-day school.
The fact that she had previously worked at the primary school and therefore knows its structures is only an advantage for Freitag.
“I am now very connected with my Startchance colleague there.
These go hand in hand.
This way you can also provide better support to the children when they move on to the fifth grade.”
The Eurasburger also sees herself as a confidant for all problems that the students want to talk to her about.
The educational coordinator, who currently works at Lebenshilfe, also attaches importance to maintaining contact with parents.
On Friday it’s “just fun to see what the children become when they get a little support.”
She recently helped a young man in the group write applications.
“And we were happy together when a confirmation came.”
Fun doesn't come to an end while you're working
Despite all the learning, the fun doesn't fall by the wayside while working.
In addition to school work, we make snacks, play games and go on excursions together.
“What do the young people say?” said Barbara Freitag, followed by her own answer: “It works.” The only thing that could be improved is the number of coaches.
“We now have three student and three teacher coaches for our 25 children – and me.
That’s not enough.” That’s why Freitag would like to welcome more supporters to the team.
“You should be at least 16 years old, have attended secondary school or high school and simply enjoy working with young people.”
