Bad Tölz – The automatic emergency call systems in cars are a blessing and a curse.
This became clear at the annual meeting of the Tölz fire department.
On the one hand, the so-called Ecalls can save lives, but on the other hand, they give the fire departments a lot of false alarms.
All in all, the Tölzer fire brigade has never been on the move as often as last year - 271 missions meant a new record.

Their number increased from 44 to 67 last year, reported Commander Thomas Fuchsgruber.
38 of these alarms were caused by fire alarm systems, and automatic emergency calls were responsible for four false alarms.
These emergency calls are triggered, for example, when an airbag in a car deploys or when the speed sensor in a smartphone registers noticeable movement.
“Twice we had the case that a smartphone was simply lying on the roof of a car,” reported Fuchsgruber.
“We went there and looked for the phone, even though nothing had happened.” The commander assumes that the number of “ecalls” will continue to rise as this technology becomes more widespread.

The Tölzers are on trend with these numbers.
The number of false alarms in the district rose from 200 to 302 last year, reported district fire inspector Wolfgang Stahl.
“Ecalls” are also a technical achievement: “Someone may drive into a tree at night.
And then an “ecall” is the only way to get a rescue.”

Maybe people still need to learn how to use the new technology better.
Many alarms are triggered when vehicles are being repaired in workshops.
In addition, people must learn that “if an accident occurs, they should sit in the car for a moment and not immediately insult the other road user.”
When an “ecall” is received, an attempt is made to reach those involved in the accident by telephone, says Stahl.
“If no one is in the car, the callback will be ineffective.”

Hailstorms, fires and violent accidents
Fuchsgruber also reported on the major hailstorm in August last year, although the district town was only marginally affected.
The fire department waited a few minutes until the “bad storm” was over.
Fuchsgruber: “It was too dangerous to go out on the streets.” In the hours that followed, the fire department had to deal with alarms about fallen trees and broken branches.
The fire brigade had the greatest deployment at the Alte Madlschule, which had a tin roof.
The urban area was spared from major fires in 2023.
The most notable in February were a kitchen fire on Klosterweg due to a defective oven and the fire in a pavilion in the rose garden.
The first serious accident occurred on March 8, when two vehicles collided head-on near the pedestrian bridge on the bypass.
And on July 3rd, the Tölz fire department was informed of an accident on Greilinger Berg, where a car had crashed into a tree.
