2023 was a record year when it comes to sick leave.

When it comes to sick leave, 2023 was a record year for Germany.
According to figures from the health insurance company DAK, 13 percent more people were absent due to illness compared to the previous year.
More than half of employees had at least one sick note in 2023, where the following things are allowed.
The annual average number of days absent per person was 20.
Respiratory diseases such as colds, bronchitis and flu were mainly responsible for the high illness rate.
In addition, there are more mental illnesses (here are tips if they occur in children).
But in which jobs did people call in sick most often?
The health insurance company also looked at that.

7. Medical health professions
Across all professions, sick leave among DAK insured people was 5.5 percent in 2023.
This means that 55 people per 1,000 insured people were on sick leave every day.
In the medical health professions there were 62.
If you look not at occupational groups but at sectors, the sickness rate in the health care sector was well above average at 6.7 percent.
6. Transport and logistics professions without vehicle driving
In transport and logistics professions without driving vehicles, the sickness rate was 6.4 percent in 2023.

5. Metal production and processing, metal construction professions
Of every 1,000 people who work in metal production, metal construction or metal processing, 68 people were sick last year.
A sickness rate of 6.8 percent.
It is not without reason that many illnesses that one gets in these professions are considered occupational diseases.
Things are different for classic desk jobs.

4. Mechanical and automotive engineering professions
The sickness rate in mechanical and automotive engineering professions was also 6.8 percent in 2023.
3. Driver of vehicle and transport equipment
Of every 1,000 people who work as vehicle drivers, 69 people were sick last year.
A sickness rate of 6.9 percent.
With regard to the ongoing rail strikes, this explains a lot.

In educational professions and other social and theological activities, the sickness rate was seven percent in 2023.

1. Non-medical health, personal care and wellness professions, medical technology
Of every 1,000 people who work in health, personal care and wellness professions or medical technology, 74 people were sick last year.
A sickness rate of 7.4 percent.
This puts this professional group in first place by far.
Here a person is talking about the “catastrophic” situation in the clinics due to the shortage of nursing staff.
By the way: The data processing industry (especially computer scientists) again had the lowest sickness rate in 2023 at 3.5 percent.
