The Akita Inu and Shiba Inu have distinct histories despite their shared roots in Japan.
The Akita inu
is native to the Akita province on the island of Honshu.
Its name also means
“Akita dog”
in Japanese.
This is a majestic breed that was originally bred for large-scale hunting.
The Shiba inu
is a breed native to the mountainous province of Shubu.
Originally, the word
"shiba"
indicates something small, and the word
"inu"
means dog, which therefore gives
"small dog".
Just like the Akita, the Shiba is also a hunting dog, but it is intended for hunting birds and small game.
According to the French Book of Origins (LOF), these two dogs were threatened with extinction.
The Japanese government, then keen to safeguard the few purebred lines, conferred the status of
“National Heritage”
for the Akita inu in 1934 and
“Natural Monument”
for the Shiba in 1937.

Dogs that require an experienced owner
When it comes to their personalities, the Shiba inu is often described as loyal, independent, and calm.
Behind this temperament hides a lively and enduring dog who needs significant physical activity to be happy.
Although he tends to isolate himself, a bit like a cat, the Shiba Inu thrives in deep relationships with his master, based on respect and tenderness.
Its socialization is not difficult for attentive owners.
However, he needs a firm education, but with a lot of kindness and gentleness.
Well educated, the Shiba will be a very good guardian.
Naturally not very talkative, he only starts barking when he feels in danger.
The Akita inu, on the other hand, is often described as courageous, proud and sometimes stubborn.
He must therefore be educated by patient and experienced masters who will take the time necessary to teach him obedience.
If trained young, the Akita can understand and apply many rules.
This loyal dog is very attached to his master.
He can therefore be more cautious and even suspicious of strangers, which can make him an excellent watchdog.
