Honor where honor is due: Miesbach's mayor Gerhard Braunmiller (l.), commander Matthias Resch (2nd from right) and district fire chief Christian Probst (r.) honored (from 2nd from left) Felix Böhlke and Sebastian Schmitz (both ten years of active fire service) and Christian Wieser (40 years old) for her loyalty to the Miesbach Volunteer Fire Department.

Thomas Stumbeck (20 years of active service, not in the photo) also received an honor.

The Miesbach fire department recorded a sharp increase in the number of operations in 2023.

One main reason, according to Commander Matthias Resch: the “all-inclusive mentality” among the population.

Miesbach

– A “certain all-out mentality among the population” was noted by Miesbach’s fire brigade commander Matthias Resch at the 156th general meeting.

Some citizens today would call the fire department much more quickly than before.

For example, when a storm causes a branch to fall onto the sidewalk.

Instead of simply clearing it away yourself or asking a neighbor for help, the motto today is often: “Someone will do it, the fire department if necessary.”

Resch was able to prove that the latter was often the case in Miesbach last year with the impressive number of appearances.

The volunteers went out 217 times in 2023 – a new record.

For comparison: in 2022 there were 50 fewer missions.

In 189 cases, the troops were called upon in the district town itself, and 28 times in supra-regional operations.

If you look at the individual alarm categories, you can see an increase everywhere: 55 fires (previous year 43), 109 technical assistance calls (85), 53 security guards (39).

According to Resch, first aid operations are still on the rise.

An understandable trend, after all, the fire brigade is often on site quicker than the rescue service due to its comprehensive presence when providing first aid or resuscitation.

More technical assistance

The shift from fires to technical assistance becomes particularly clear when breaking down the total of 2,630 operational hours: there were 861 for the former in 2023 (983 in 2022), 1,420 for the latter (936 in 2022).

Firefighters worked 348 hours at security guards (248 in 2022).

In terms of people, there were 1,099 active people on site during the fires, 1,318 for technical assistance and 122 for security guards.

The troops invested a lot of time in training and exercises in 2023.

The statistics show 2175 training hours as well as 18 monthly and small exercises.

As youth officer Sebastian Kunze proudly reported, the young people also passed their intermediate and final exams in modular troop training.

The fire department enriched club life in Miesbach, for example at the district-wide blue light day and with its own stand at Advent Magic.

Praise from the mayor and district fire chief

Praise for the exemplary commitment of the Miesbach Volunteer Fire Department in 2023 was also received at the general meeting from the highest employer, Mayor Gerhard Braunmiller.

He attested to the activists' "great commitment and tireless commitment to the safety of citizens and the well-being of the district town and the general public."

With regard to financial investments and unavoidable new purchases, the management board of the Miesbach fire department would always demonstrate “considered and far-sighted advance planning”.

District fire chief Christian Probst was happy to confirm these assessments.

Commander Resch had no doubt that the volunteers will have a lot to do in the coming years and that the high number of deployments will probably not be a one-off outlier: “The trend is probably more upward than downward.”
