A short but dangerous escape from the federal police ended on Tuesday near Mittenwald with the arrest of a suspected smuggler.

After the car came to an abrupt stop on Federal Highway 2, the driver ran into the adjacent forest.

He suddenly sprayed an officer who was able to catch up with him in the face with pepper spray.

Mittenwald

- Subsequent police officers managed to catch the Belarusian.

He was carrying three Syrian migrants in his car.

The 21-year-old was taken into custody on Wednesday on a court order.

When the car, registered in Poland, with the three people in it approached the checkpoint, the man behind the wheel did not reduce the speed.

He also ignored the officer's signals to stop.

As one of the occupants later reported, he drove past him in an evasive maneuver, causing the car to skid.

The Syrians feared for their lives.

Apparently it dawned on the Belarusian that his escape would not work.

“After about half a kilometer he made an emergency stop, fell out of the vehicle and ran into the forest adjacent to the main road,” said a federal police spokesman.

An officer managed to catch up with the man.

Immediately before he could get hold of him, he pulled out the pepper spray.

However, other pursuers quickly arrived and handcuffed him.

Meanwhile, other law enforcement officers took the Syrian passengers, who remained obviously frightened in the getaway car, into custody.

They went to the police station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

According to them, they had to pay a total of around 15,000 euros per person to be smuggled into Germany.

The smugglers would have charged each person several hundred euros for the last stage alone.

The men, aged 18, 23 and 28, were then taken to a refugee reception center in Munich.

The police officer who was treated with an irritant was taken to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic.

“He was no longer fit for duty for the time being,” says the police spokesman.

“However, no permanent damage is currently expected.” The Rosenheim Federal Police Inspectorate is investigating the Belarusian, who has a Polish visa, for smuggling in foreigners, physically attacking or resisting law enforcement officers and causing grievous bodily harm.

He was brought before the district court in Munich on Wednesday afternoon.

The Belarusian is now incarcerated in the Munich-Stadelheim correctional facility.
