Always bigger, ever more energy-consuming and ever more polluting.
While the vast majority of industrialized countries are rushing to green their vehicle fleets, Australia is taking the opposite direction.
According to figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, the ten best-selling cars in 2023 in Australia are all pick-ups or SUVs, two types which accounted for almost 80% of new vehicle sales.
A phenomenon so massive that Standards Australia, the Australian institute responsible for standards, recently recommended extending parking spaces.
At the top of the podium, the Ford Ranger, an off-road pick-up, followed by the Toyota Hilux, number one in sales for the previous seven years, and finally the Isuzu D-Max.
Only one electric vehicle, Tesla's Model Y, an SUV, managed to climb this ranking.
“A little madness”
These vehicles are however expensive, and the price of fuel, although it remains almost 30% lower than the prices observed in France…
