"In Italy, renewable sources, with 5.2 solar Gigawatts and 0.4 wind Gigawatts installed in 2023 (5.6 overall, ed.), regain a significant role in energy choices".
Gianni Silvestrini, scientific director of the environmentalist NGO Kyoto Club, said this at the conference in Rome "Renewables are good for Italy", organized by his association.
"Renewable power in the world grew by 51% in 2023 - continued Silvestrini -, reaching 510 gigawatts, especially thanks to China, which installed over 200 Gw of solar and wind power. A real boom, which also saw an awakening in Italy. The acceleration of renewables will be decisive in the fight against climate change, very useful in reducing dependence on methane imports, which is important for the creation of jobs".
Silvestrini recalled that at the last UN climate conference, COP 28 in December in Dubai, it was decided to triple the world's energy power from renewable sources.
This means moving from the current 3,500 Gw of global renewable energy to 11 thousand Gw by the end of the decade.
Extremely strong growth, which should continue in the following years.
In Europe, Germany is driving the sector: in 2023, for the first time, renewables exceeded 50% of electricity production, reaching 57.1%.
Italy, despite major delays, is showing signs of vitality as demonstrated by the 5 GW photovoltaics installed in 2023.
