Italy "is behind" in the protection and enhancement of aquatic ecosystems and wetlands: delays in the establishment of new protected areas and in the application of EU Regulation 2021/57 which prohibits the use of lead ammunition, which can cost the Country an infringement procedure.

Furthermore, the new decree is awaited to define the authorizations in derogation for the introduction of fish of alien species.

Legambiente highlights this on the eve of World Wetlands Day 2024 - whose slogan this year is "Wetlands and human well-being" - by presenting the report "Aquatic ecosystems 2024".

    In taking stock of Italy's main delays on the topic, Legambiente reminds the Government of four priorities on which to intervene quickly: 1) strengthening environmental regulations for the protection of wetlands and aquatic ecosystems;

2) establishment of new river protected areas and wetlands of international interest;

3) fight against invasive alien species with national regulations consistent with European strategies; 4) fight against environmental illegalities in aquatic ecosystems.

    From the sustainable management experience of the Municipality of Posada (Nuoro) to the artificial islet made with mussel shells in the Corru Mannu pond (Oristano), Legambiente also illustrates the good practices and nature-based solutions to be replicated in the area to counter the climate crisis.

    There are over 70 events organized by the Legambiente territorial circles from 2 to 17 February.
