The planned agricultural alliance in Weihenstephan has raised concerns among researchers and politicians.

In the FT interview, the dean of TUM takes a clear stance.

Freising

– Research at the TU in Freising-Weihenstephan is under the motto “One Health”.

This became clear once again at the research institution's traditional New Year's reception.

Dean Prof. Dr. explained what the term stands for and how the campus has changed in the past year.

Ingrid Kögel-Knabner afterwards in the FT interview.

And she also spoke about the rumors of a merger between TU and the neighboring HSWT.

Ms. Prof. Dr.

Kögel-Knabner, over 1,500 first semester students, a total of more than 4,800 students at the TUM in Freising – is that something special for you?

Yes, because at many German universities the numbers are now trending downwards.

In our case, however, the trend is still slightly increasing.

But we are not pushing growth because our capacities are already well utilized.

Our focus continues to be the high-quality education of students.

Good teaching staff is essential for this.

Eleven new professors were appointed in 2023.

Yes, and I'm pleased that there are eight women among them.

The proportion of female professors is now 32 percent.

At the same time, we also said goodbye to seven retiring colleagues at the New Year's reception.

The demographic development and the fact that the baby boomers are now retiring also presents us with major challenges - especially since we not only want to adequately replace outgoing professors, but also open up new areas of research at the same time.

Construction is already underway on Liesel-Beckmann-Straße.

What does the new Center for Infection Prevention stand for?

As the name suggests, the research there revolves around preventing infectious diseases in humans and animals - especially at a time when the habitats of humans and animals are increasingly overlapping.

The Corona pandemic has recently shown how important it is to research measures to prevent the pathogens from being transmitted.

In addition to ecology and nutritional research, we see this precautionary aspect as a big topic here in Weihenstephan.

The TUM in Freising has adopted “One Health” as its slogan.

What's behind it?

This is actually quite simple.

We want people and animals to be healthy - and that is only possible in a healthy environment.

We are not a medical school, it is not about fixing anything, but rather about maintaining healthy ecosystems and developing healthy diets for people and animals.

Here too, prevention is the central concept.

My news

  • This is how high Freising's average rent is

  • Shadows over the solar project of a Wolfersdorf farmer

  • “A little nervous”: Benedikt Schuhbauer cooks against four competitors on the TV show “Mein Lokal, Dein Lokal”.

  • Vöttinger are taking a front against the asylum center on Giggenhauser Straßelesen

  • The application was waved through straight away - the first sense of achievement for the new Echinger local council

  • Restrictions in rail traffic between Freising and Marzling: Travelers expect train cancellations and SEV reading

A New Year's reception always offers the opportunity to look back on the past year.

What do you like to remember?

A highlight was certainly the laying of the foundation stone for the Center for Infection Prevention.

I am also very pleased that TUM has done very well in various university rankings and that many Freising researchers and teachers have been awarded prizes.

We have also reorganized our International Office so that we can further intensify our international relationships in the future, and the same applies to our commitment to the start-up industry.

I also think it's great that campus life is continually improving.

We now have a savings bank and a bakery on campus, a calisthenics facility and a newly renovated student hall.

Personally, I would like a small supermarket.

Last spring, unrest grew at the neighboring Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University: There were rumors that the TU could swallow the HSWT.

What is the current status?

Because the structural reform is still in full swing, it is difficult to comment on it.

However, what the TU has always said: The TU does not want to swallow the HSWT - and neither does the State Agricultural Institute.

Both the TU and the HSWT and the State Agricultural Institute have independent tasks.

In our opinion, mixing these is not a sensible approach.

But of course one can certainly think about more intensive cooperation in many areas.

And does TUM also have resolutions for 2024?

Sustainability is a big topic, and we are planning an extra day in Garching in the summer.

It starts with mobility, through construction to the green campus: the agenda is comprehensive.

We are also working hard on the digitalization of all processes.

We are now well positioned in terms of teaching, but there is still room for improvement, especially in internal processes, such as in the personnel area.

And, that's not a resolution, but it is a reason to be happy: the two new master's programs "AgriFood Economics, Policy and Regulation" and "Sustainable Food" will start in the winter semester of 2024/25.
