Praise and blame for Munich's drivers

2024-02-01T14:29:44.203Z

Highlights: 50 new dialogue displays are to be put into operation across the city – two per district. The signs not only show the current speed, but also praise and blame directly. If the speed is appropriate, the word “Thank you” appears in green letters, if the driver is traveling too fast, the words “Slow” appear in red. The first two systems were installed yesterday on Welfenstrasse (Au) between a house for children and a playground.

Sometimes direct feedback is most helpful - this wisdom applies to many areas of life and also to road traffic.

That's why the city of Munich wants to increasingly rely on so-called dialogue displays in the future, which will tell drivers directly whether they are driving too fast or sticking to the specified speed limit.

The first two systems have now been installed.

“The Au-Haidhausen district committee was one of the first to decide to install two speed indicators at sensitive traffic points,” says construction officer Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer.

There is now one display between the house for children on the Don Bosco campus and the large play and green area at Tassiloplatz on Welfenstrasse, the second also on Welfenstrasse to the east between Regerstrasse and Senftlstrasse, surrounded by the nearby schools.

Ehbauer: “A very good choice, especially with regard to the youngest road users.”

Signs praise drivers - or scold them

The signs not only show the current speed, but also praise and blame directly.

If the speed is appropriate, the word “Thank you” appears in green letters.

If the driver is traveling too fast, the word “Slow” appears in red.

The effectiveness of these displays has been sufficiently studied.

An accident research study conducted by insurers has shown that the “use of dialogue displays with their praise and blame principle is an adequate means of achieving acceptable speeds in sensitive areas within urban areas”.

Their effect is significantly higher than that of displays that only show the speed driven without praise or criticism.

50 systems are to be installed in Munich

The first two systems were installed yesterday on Welfenstrasse (Au) between a house for children and a playground.

50 new dialogue displays are to be put into operation across the city – two per district.

Building officer Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer says: “Most district committees have already taken advantage of the offer to order the dialogue displays from the building department.” There are currently orders from 15 districts.

The displays will be set up gradually over the next few weeks.
