In the early hours of Sunday morning, the federal police checked a vehicle with Bulgarian registration.
The driver and his four companions were able to properly identify themselves.
“When asked how old the puppy was that was sitting unsecured on the passenger’s lap, none of the five Bulgarians could provide any information,” the federal police said in a press release.
“The Pomeranian was simply intended to be a gift for a relative, the travelers stated.”
After checking the pet passport, the officials discovered that the rabies vaccination required for import into Germany was missing.
The age of the puppy was also not stated on the ID card.
The federal police then informed the responsible veterinary office, secured the approximately 10-week-old Pomeranian and handed him over to an animal shelter.
He must initially remain in quarantine there for a few weeks.
