The circumstances of the accident still remain unclear.
While on a sidewalk in Rueil-Malmaison, a pedestrian was mowed down by a motorist early Wednesday afternoon.
The 73-year-old man, very seriously injured, was transported to Percy hospital in Clamart.
It was around 1:50 p.m. that the suspect – a 21-year-old man taken into police custody just after the incident – lost control of his Renault Clio while he was driving on Avenue Bonaparte.
“According to initial information, he simply fell asleep at the wheel,” confides a police source.
He headed towards the sidewalk where he mowed down the victim.

However, the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
“The screening tests both turned out to be negative” continues the same source.
The 73-year-old retiree was treated by firefighters in cardiorespiratory arrest before being admitted in absolute emergency to Percy hospital.
On Friday, another retiree, aged 92, was the victim of a serious accident.
In circumstances which remain to be clarified, the nonagenarian who was riding a bicycle without a helmet collided with a motorcyclist before falling heavily.
The latter lost consciousness when he was taken in by emergency services.
He was transported in a condition considered worrying to Beaujon hospital in Clichy.
