The parents' initiative Intern 3 at the Haunersche children's cancer ward is very busy: they are currently urgently looking for a senior doctor and at the same time new active colleagues.

District

- When Alois Fruth recently accepted a check for just over 2,500 euros for the Intern 3 parent initiative at the Haunerschen Children's Hospital in Munich in the Markt Schwabener Franz-Marc-Gymnasium, he was immediately asked what he could do with the money.

For example, says the Isener, you can use it to buy an avatar.

Almost anyway.

When you hear the word avatars, you immediately think of American science fiction and/or the journey to Pandora.

Some may also think of the artificial beings or graphic figures that internet users use to move around in the virtual world.

The avatars that Fruth is referring to have nothing to do with any of this.

The chairman of the parents' initiative is referring to those robot-like fellows who can be used in lessons.

And thanks to their now advanced technical development, they can create an optimal connection between, for example, a child who has been sick for a long time and what is happening in class.

It is pleasing that the Ebersberg district has its own pool of avatars, which the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium has already used on loan.

But the data protection hurdles for this are high, Fruth regrets.

For example, if there are parents of classmates who express concerns here, an avatar should not be used in case of doubt;

to the chagrin of the child, who may even have a long-term illness and is unable to take part in the lessons.

A successful project: Avatars used in school lessons

Compared to conventional video conferences, which found their way into everyday school life, especially during the peak phase of the corona pandemic, the service of said avatars has one major advantage, according to Fruth: He says that not much technical knowledge is required to use it to operate.

According to him, they are suitable for children from the third grade onwards.

The Intern 3 association owns two devices and they have been in use for over a year.

The district currently has three, all of which were purchased in 2023.

And they are also used regularly.

Currently, according to the press office of the district office, at the high schools in Kirchseeon and Grafing as well as at the secondary school in Ebersberg.

They cost a good 3000 euros;

with annual operating costs estimated at around 1000 euros.

The district also has the small robots that you can borrow

In a conversation with the local newspaper, Alois Fruth, who works in the IT industry, reports that hardly anyone knows about the avatars.

That's why one of the primary goals of his association is to set up a kind of database together with the school for the sick so that they can step in quickly in special emergencies.

As district press spokeswoman Laura Tendel says upon request, any school in the district can borrow it depending on availability.

The “order” is made via the district’s media center.

In terms of data protection, the class's information and consent as well as compliance with standards such as password protection are required, Laura Tendel also confirms Fruth's experiences.

Of course, the initiative currently has no plans to purchase another avatar.

The club can also use the money recently donated by the Swabian high school students elsewhere.

Fruth points to an acute shortage of senior doctors in the three departments of the children's cancer ward at the Hauner Clinic.

Each ward has a senior doctor, but there is no replacement.

“Above all, we lack doctors with experience,” said the Isener.

And doctors who don't allow themselves to be shocked even if they are faced with 12 to 14 hours of work a day.

Urgent: Parents are looking for a senior doctor as a “replacement”

In order to relieve the burden on the existing team of senior doctors, the Intern 3 association, which also works intensively with the Ebersberg Children's Cancer Aid, recently decided to specifically look for another senior doctor and to pay for it at its own expense.

The clinic management involved them in this “deal”.

According to Fruth, the parents' initiative is currently already paying for eight third-party funded positions.

There is an urgent need for reliable donations.

However, Corona has caused a slack in this regard.

For the first time ever, the association officially based in Munich was forced to ask for donations in the form of an emergency appeal.

The valley has now bottomed out.

According to the chairman, 2023 was a good year for donations.
