Finally a turnaround after the many shop closures in downtown Dorfen: On Friday a café will open on Rathausplatz, and on Saturday a grocery store will open on Unterer Markt.

Dorfen

– We hear again and again about business closures in downtown Dorfen.

The people of Isenstadt are all the more pleased that news once again points in the opposite direction: Tomorrow Meier's Café-Bistro will open on Rathausplatz, and the next day the grocery store on Unterer Markt will open.

The people of Dorfen are already curious and are looking forward to the two new offers in the heart of the city.

Bettina Wegner stops in front of the glass window on Unterer Markt and takes a look.

“That looks cool,” says the 28-year-old mother.

“If I run out of milk or salt, I can jump in for a moment.” Michael Schweiger is still working in the shop.

He wants to open the doors for the first time on Saturday.

“We really liked Dorfen as a market place, a beautiful old town that still lacks a grocery store,” says the Wasserburger, explaining his choice of location.

Its range has everything that every grocery store offers.

He sources the goods from different dealers.

“We are local suppliers.” He also wants to offer regional fruit and vegetables: “We are slowly getting closer to it.” There will be a book at the checkout where customers can write down their wishes for their daily needs.

“Not everything will be perfect on Saturday,” admits the franchise entrepreneur.

A branch manager and sales staff are still being sought.

“It’s definitely going to be a little chaotic, but we’re finally opening.”

Passers-by in the city are happy that the city center is being revitalized again.

“We are sad that more and more traditional shops have closed in the last year; empty shops seem somehow depressing,” says Christine Schreiber from Isen, a native of Dorfen who often strolls around Isenstadt with her husband and grandchild.

“I still remember the time when the Fenk food market still existed,” she says.

Over 15 years ago, the Gruber clothing store took over the lease from the Spar Group and opened a branch here.

Since then, you have to carry bags if you don't have a car.

The next option for bulk shopping are the discounters and supermarkets on Haager Straße.

Not always easy, especially for seniors, says Regina Niedermeier.

“But everyone else will also benefit from the market,” says the bookseller who works opposite.

“Now I can run over after closing time and run errands,” she says happily.

Niedermeier is also worried about the vacancies.

“We don’t know who else will close everything here in the city center in the near future.”

Because vacancies also have an impact on the other stores.

“Dorfen is losing a lot due to the closure of the business,” says Wolfgang Meier from the Hammerschmid toy store.

In quality of life, but also in purchasing power.

“Far fewer people from outside come to shop when there is less and less on offer here,” is his summary.

The Ziegler was a magnet for customers, and now Farben Mayer and the Schubert photo drugstore have also closed: “It can't continue like this.” Because one business closure often leads to the next.

The toy dealer's father, Reinhold Meier, is currently taking action against this.

The 79-year-old from Dorfen is pleased about the opening of his café-bistro next to the town hall.

The Gruber bakery from Lengdorf previously had a branch here, but had to close it due to a lack of staff.

After the termination, Meier was unable to find a new tenant for the retail space.

“Vacancy is deadly for a city.

That’s why I decided to open a new bistro.” Helga Harms runs the business for him.

“We get bread and rolls from outside, the cakes and tarts are all homemade.”

It is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. – including Sundays.

“People no longer have to go to the gas station to get their croissants,” says Harms.

After all, there is now not a single bakery in the city of Dorfen that is still open on Sundays.

In addition, guests are served in the bistro from Thursday to Saturday until 10 p.m., and even every day in the summer months.

“We have a beautiful terrace,” advertises Meier.

The menu includes Obazda, white sausage and pretzels as well as other Bavarian delicacies, as well as snack plates, also vegan and vegetarian.

Wine is also served.

“We’ll wait and see how everything develops,” says Meier, explaining his concept.

His wish: He would ideally like to get the former landlord of Lebzelter, Sepp Vogl, on board: “Maybe we can then offer some real Bavarian dishes on pre-order and build a kitchen.” Because one thing is missing in Dorfen more than ever: “ A good Bavarian economy.”
