The FBI has announced that it has dismantled a Chinese hacker network known as 'Volt Typhoon', which targeted key American public sector infrastructure.

The agency's director Christopher Wray explained in a hearing before a congressional committee that in May 2023 the United States and its allies accused the Chinese-backed group of having infiltrated US strategic networks, accusations immediately rejected by Beijing.

Wray explained that the hackers were ready to "create chaos and cause harm to American citizens and communities. If and when China decides the time has come to strike, it will not only focus on political or military objectives," he added director of the FBI.

Deputy Attorney General Matthew Olsen, who works in the Justice Department's national security division, said Volt Typhoon's access to U.S. infrastructure is something China "could exploit in a future crisis."
