First the train, then public transport and now air transport - travelers are constantly having to reschedule these days due to labor disputes.

What you need to know for the warning strike at the airports on Thursday.

Berlin/Frankfurt - Once again, travelers have to reschedule due to a labor dispute.

The Verdi union has called for warning strikes at around a dozen airports in Germany this Thursday in the collective bargaining dispute in the aviation security industry.

The airport association ADV expects around 1,100 flight cancellations or delays.

Around 200,000 passengers are affected, as the association announced on Wednesday.

Passengers now have to take this into account.

Which airports are affected?

Verdi is calling for warning strikes at eleven airports nationwide: Frankfurt, at the capital airport BER, Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, Hanover, Hamburg, Bremen, Dresden, Leipzig/Halle and Erfurt.

However, the important Munich hub is not on strike.

At Nuremberg Airport, security staff are also operating without restrictions.

Are all flights canceled at the affected locations?

Restrictions vary greatly depending on location.

Some airports have already announced that there will be no departures there on Thursday.

This is the case at BER in Schönefeld as well as in Hamburg, Hanover and Stuttgart.

No local passengers will be able to board at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday.

Passengers should not come to the airport and should contact their airlines for alternative travel options, a spokesman said.

How big the impact on the flight schedule at Germany's largest airport was initially unclear, as at least intercontinental and European flights can take place.

Lufthansa called on its own passengers via its app on Wednesday not to come to Frankfurt, Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden and Erfurt airports because boarding there was not possible.

How do I know if my flight is canceled and how do I find an alternative?

The contact person with information about your own flight, rebooking options and alternatives is usually the respective airline.

The airports themselves often provide information on their websites about the flight status of take-offs and landings planned for the corresponding day.

In the event of a flight cancellation due to a strike or a delay of more than three hours, the airline must offer travelers alternative transport to their destination - for example by rebooking them on another flight.

This often happens automatically.

Or the airline offers the option of converting the ticket for domestic flights into a train ticket.

When does the warning strike start?

At most locations, the strike begins when operations begin early Thursday morning.

At BER, for example, the warning strike is scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m.

Where there is no ban on night flights, industrial action can start earlier.

In Cologne/Bonn, for example, Verdi wants to start the strike this Wednesday at 9 p.m.

When will things go back to normal?

This also varies depending on the airport because the duration of the strike depends on the end and start of the shift, as a Verdi spokesman said upon request.

At one location on Thursday the strike could be over later in the evening and elsewhere it could continue until midnight.

The aim is for air traffic to resume as usual on Friday, Verdi said.

Why is Verdi calling for a warning strike?

The background to the industrial action is the collective bargaining round for the aviation security industry.

According to Verdi, it is negotiating there for around 25,000 employees.

They check passengers, luggage and staff at the airports.

Without them, the security areas cannot be operated.

This is why there are far-reaching restrictions on air traffic.

In the collective bargaining dispute, Verdi is demanding a flat-rate increase in hourly wages of 2.80 euros and faster surcharges over a period of twelve months.

Aviation security assistants in the lowest salary group currently earn 20.60 euros an hour, which adds up to a gross salary of almost 3,300 euros for 160 monthly working hours.

There are also surcharges for night work, Sundays and public holidays and overtime.

The last time there were warning strikes by aviation security was in March last year.

At that time it was about the working conditions of the employees, who had achieved significant wage increases in recent years.

According to their own information, employers from the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) have offered 4 percent more money for this year and 3 percent more money for next year.

When will negotiations continue there?

Two further rounds have already been agreed for February 6th and 7th and 21st and 22nd.
