Christiane (79) and Erhard (80) Meißner recently celebrated their 60th marriage anniversary.

The couple seems completely satisfied, only one wish has so far been denied to them.

Alxing – Christiane (79) and Erhard (80) Meißner have been married for 60 years.

Immediately after Christmas, on December 27th, the couple celebrated their diamond wedding in Alxing (Bruck municipality).

However, the couple was only now able to accept the gift baskets from Mayor Josef Schwäbl and Deputy District Administrator Magdalena Föstl.

As is usual with the Meißners, special family celebrations are enjoyed from afar in the presence of the entire family.

“We were on vacation in Austria with our son and daughter-in-law,” reports Christiane Meißner with shining eyes.

This family tradition is no coincidence: the couple met on the Baltic Sea.

Both happened to be there on vacation with their training class at the same time.

While Erhard was almost fully trained as a locksmith, Christiane had only just begun her apprenticeship as a technical draftsman.

Surrounded by the fresh sea air, the two liked each other, so they met again in their hometown of Leipzig immediately after their return.

It didn't take long for sparks to fly and the young couple looked for their own apartment in the middle of the city.

They finally got married on December 27, 1963.

After completing their apprenticeship, the couple decided to do a distance learning course in mechanical engineering.

“We wrote exams and worked full-time at the same time,” remembers Erhard Meißner of the late 1960s.

So it happened that son Sven only saw the light of day in 1974.

Christiane and Erhard Meißner had already been married for almost ten years.

“Our relatives always said: You probably don’t want to have children,” says the 79-year-old.

“But we were just waiting for the right time,” adds Erhard Meißner.

However, a lot changed with the birth of their son: due to little Sven's severe bronchitis, the family had to move away from Leipzig.

She ended up in Jena, where Erhard found a job as a production manager at Carl Zeiss.

But now the family was struggling badly in the GDR.

“We feel really comfortable here”: Christiane and Erhard Meißner only have one wish

Less than six months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Leipzig natives moved west, more precisely to Haar, and later to Vaterstetten.

In 2000, the Meißners packed their bags for the last time.

They have now found a home in Alxing.

“Coming here was the best decision ever,” says Erhard Meißner.

“We were so well received, we feel really at home here.”

The couple has only been denied one wish: grandchildren.

But the neighborhood children can help.

The three boys and a girl keep standing on the doorstep of their surrogate grandparents.

“We are very happy about that,” says Christiane Meißner.

And until the children get out of school, the couple likes to cycle around the district.

“That keeps us fit,” says 80-year-old Erhard with a smile.
