Students from the Anne-Frank-Gymnasium Erding score points in national mathematics competitions.

Erding

– Smart minds learn at the Anne Frank High School Erding (AFG).

Math teachers Johann Stitzl and Sabine Reither said that students were successful in national mathematics competitions with several teams and as individuals.

An international competition that requires not only an understanding of mathematics but also team spirit is called “Bolyai”.

It is important to work together constructively, purposefully and quickly in order to solve the 14 brain teasers provided in just 60 minutes.

The competition is particularly fun because people work together as a team instead of as individuals, say Stitzl and Reither.

Two teams from the 6th and 7th grades of the AFG took on this challenge in mid-January.

Both teams mastered it with flying colors, their teachers write proudly.

“The 6th math geniuses”, as one of the two groups called themselves, came 10th out of 197 teams in the Bavaria/Thuringia comparison group.

Four AFG students achieved Olympic honors; they were very successful at this year's Bavaria-wide Mathematics Olympiad at the University of Würzburg.

In the first round, participants had to complete a homework competition.

The math teachers wrote that the tasks were “very tricky.”

The seventh graders Jonas Küsters, Vinzenz Stadl, Valentin Schmid and Xing Liu mastered the tasks with flying colors.

All four also tackled the second round, a four-hour exam, with great success.

Xing Liu in particular achieved an outstanding result with 39 out of 40 points.

This gave him a ticket to the state round, in which the best students from Bavaria take part, the school said.

Outstanding performance: Noah Bronold (M.) took first place in the state competition.

Ninth-grader Noah Bronold was particularly successful at the state competition.

“In order to solve the tasks, you had to have very good ideas, care and great perseverance,” says Stitzl.

The level of difficulty far exceeded the normal high school material.

Noah Bronold achieved a first prize and thus qualified for the second round.
