A resident of New Jersey admitted today (Friday) to carrying out a series of violent anti-Semitic attacks against members of the Orthodox Jewish community in the city of Lakewood in the United States during the month of April in 2022.



The man, Dion Marsh, 29 years old from the city of Manchester, New Hampshire, admitted in court Federal on five counts of hate crimes while intentionally causing injury to five of his victims and attempting to kill and wound four of the victims with a weapon, and all just because they are Jewish.



The Anti-Defamation League said close to the incident that Marsh made anti-Semitic comments when he was arrested.

"This defendant is responsible for his series of obscene anti-Semitic attacks against members of the Orthodox Jewish community," said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clark of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

"Hateful acts of violence, intended to harm, intimidate and isolate communities, have no place in our society. The Ministry of Justice will continue to aggressively prosecute perpetrators of anti-Semitic violence throughout our country."

"We have said repeatedly as we investigate a significant increase in hate crimes, hating someone is not a crime, but hating someone and then attacking them based on that hate is a violation of federal law," said FBI agent James Dennehy of the Newark FBI office.

"Marsh admits he harmed five innocent people in 2022 because they were Orthodox Jews," he continued.

"Personal beliefs do not give someone the right to attack and try to kill another human being because they may not share a similar religion or way of life. We have a clear message for the communities we serve in New Jersey, if you are the victim of a hate crime or have information that the FBI And our law enforcement partners need to know, please report it. Silence won't solve it, and we can't help if we don't know about it."

The victims were attacked because they could be identified as Orthodox Jews.

  • The near-fatal events occurred on April 8, 2022. According to court documents, "each of Marsh's victims was dressed in traditional clothing worn by members of the Orthodox Jewish community," and was attacked because they could be identified as Orthodox Jews.

  • And these are the events in which Marsh attacked Jews throughout the city according to his own admission:

  • At 1:18 p.m. on April 8, 2022, in Lakewood, Marsh forced one of them out of his car, attacked and injured him, took control of his car and drove away.

  • At 5:20 p.m., Marsh was in Lakewood driving another car when he intentionally hit another Orthodox Jewish man who could be identified with the vehicle, in an attempt to kill the victim.

  • At 6:06 p.m., Marsh used the same second vehicle to intentionally hit another person identifiable by his appearance as an Orthodox Jew, attempting to kill the victim while causing him an injury that included multiple broken bones.

  • At 6:55 p.m., Marsh, again using a vehicle he had stolen from the first victim, struck and attempted to kill another man identifiable as an Orthodox Jew while walking in Lakewood.

    Marsh got out of the vehicle and stabbed the man in the chest with a knife, seriously injuring the victim.

  • At 8:23 p.m., Marsh, still using the vehicle he stole from the first victim, intentionally hit a Jewish man walking around in the nearby city of Jackson, attempting to kill the man while causing him multiple broken bones and internal injuries.

A sentencing hearing was scheduled for June 11.

Marsh faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine for each of the four hate crime counts charging him with attempting to kill victims, a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the hate crime violation charging him with assaulting the second victim and a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for the carjacking charge.

A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering United States sentencing guidelines and other factors.
