“I am speaking to you one last time as rector, to invite you to never lose hope.

» With these words, Christophe Kerrero announced this Friday, in a letter intended for staff at the Paris academy, that he was leaving his position.

In a letter full of emotion, the now ex-rector thanks his colleagues and subordinates for their “conviction that each child can reveal the best of themselves thanks to the commitment of all”.

In his letter, this former inspector general of National Education criticizes “social reproduction” for “still characterizing our education system far too much”.

“Paris is an example, some would say a magnifying mirror,” he relates.

In an academy renowned as being "the most segregated in France", according to the words that his interlocutors reported to him upon his arrival, Christophe Kerrero believes he was "able to reverse the curves" by reforming the second grade assignment, by modifying recruitment in the Louis-le-Grand and Henri IV high schools, or by recomposing the map of training and high schools for greater social and academic diversity.

Appointed to his position in 2020, Christophe Kerrero first served as deputy director general of the Île-de-France region, responsible for high schools, between February 2016 and May 2017. Then, he was chief of staff to Jean -Michel Blanquer, then Minister of National Education, since May 18, 2017.

“Too much social reproduction in our education system”

On the side of the Ministry of National Education, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra's entourage “takes note of her decision and thanks Christophe Kerrero for his recognized action and commitment in favor of National Education”.

“All measures to support students in terms of promotion and social diversity taken by the rector of Paris are supported and financed.

They will all be carried out,” assures the minister’s entourage.

In the context of the announcement of the closure of 183 classes from the next school year in the capital, Christophe Kerrero underlines that “closing a few classes” was necessary in order to create new preparatory ones for school teaching in the face of a shortage of teachers.

“The Paris rectorate had considered three class closures to finance these initiatives (in terms of promotion and social diversity, Editor’s note).

The minister assumes her choice to launch a moratorium on these closures, and thus to support even more strongly the social project of the rectorate and the existing offer”, concludes the entourage of Amélie Oudéa-Castéra.
