Third graders from the Geretsried elementary school on Isardamm visited the fire department for early fire safety education.

Geretsried – What does a firefighter wear on duty?

How do you behave when there is a fire?

And anyway: How do you actually call the fire department?

A class at the Isardamm elementary school recently asked itself these questions.

“Fire is a big topic in our local history and science lessons right now,” says deputy principal Simone Haßlauer, who is also class leader of 3b, who is a guest at the fire department.

The volunteers open their doors to third graders about a dozen times a year.

“Fire safety education is important,” says First Commander Erik Machowski.

“A visit to us is a useful addition to the lessons.” Also because the children have reached a certain age in third grade.

“You should take something with you.

When three to five-year-old kindergarten children show up at the door, we find it difficult to convey something to them.” This is also “not possible” for volunteers.

Manuela Palik, mother of two, is an experienced contact person for class 3b.

In her professional life, the Geretsried resident works in the office, in her free time she puts her heart and soul into the fire department.

This includes further training on the subject of fire protection education at the state fire brigade school in Geretsried.

She herself helped develop the concept with which she teaches students the most important things about correct behavior in an emergency and interesting facts about fire fighters.

Of course, a lot of time is invested here.

“Preparation, two and a half hours of visiting, then cleaning up,” says Palik.

“I’m glad that my employer is so accommodating and allows me to invest this time here.”

Palik shows the young guests the individual pieces of equipment and explains the five W-questions (Who? Where? What? How many affected? Waiting for questions), the answers to which are important for a correct alert.

And of course also how you should behave if a fire occurs at home and your parents are away.

“Keep calm, close the window or door if possible, and if there are siblings there, take them outside with you.”

“Why you’re not allowed to smoke at gas stations”: Fire department demonstrates deflagration

After so much theory, it's time to get practical.

Palik has prepared stations where the children, in diverse groups - “I can't choose who I go on deployment with” - can try out how easily or difficult different materials catch fire when wet or dry.

However, Palik does not give up two experiments.

One of them shows that even fire smoke is still flammable due to the gases it contains - the other shows how dangerous a deflagration is.

She pours a few drops of mineral spirits into a tin can and ignites the gasoline-oxygen mixture.

The bang caused by the pressure released echoes through the room.

“You see,” says Palik, “that’s why you can’t smoke at gas stations.”

The students themselves are enthusiastic about this different type of teaching.

Eight-year-old Nathan gives a thumbs up.

“Let’s see,” said classmate Alissia, “maybe I’ll go to the fire department one day.

I’ll think about that when I grow up.”
