The European Parliament will discuss the case of Ilaria Salis, a 39-year-old Italian school teacher and anti-Fascist activist on trial in Hungary for allegedly attacking two Hungarian neo-Nazis almost a year ago, during its splendid session in Strasbourg on Monday.
Footage this week of Salis with her hands and feet chained and held on a lead by a police officer during a court hearing in Budapest has caused a public outcry in Italy.
The case is at the center of political row, with Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini and his League party repeatedly criticizing the woman.
Premier Giorgia Meloni said Thursday that Italy was asking for Salis's rights to be respected.
"Although criminal law is the competence of member States, Hungary has signed the European Convention on Human Rights, so the conditions of Ilaria Salis are also a problem that regard the rule of law in Hungary," said Mercedes Bresso, an MEP for the centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
Salis's father Roberto, meanwhile, had a meeting in Milan with Senate Speaker Ignazio La Russa on Friday.
