On Friday, the Federal Council approved the proposal from Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP).

“This paves the way for his appointment by the Federal President,” said the minister.

Jens Rommel (51) takes over from Peter Frank, who moved to the Federal Constitutional Court as a judge.

Rommel has been a judge at the Federal Court of Justice since 2020.

From 2015 to 2020 he also headed the central office of the state judicial administration for solving National Socialist crimes in Ludwigsburg.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office is the highest prosecution authority in Germany.

She is responsible for outstanding proceedings in areas such as terrorism, espionage and international criminal law.

The authority, headquartered in Karlsruhe, employs around 300 people.

As the federal public prosecutor's office, it reports to the Federal Ministry of Justice.

“With his professional competence, personal integrity, leadership strength and his passion for our constitutional state, Jens Rommel will fulfill this important task very well,” said Buschmann with conviction.

It is not yet known when exactly Rommel will take office.

During the vacancy, the permanent representative of the Federal Prosecutor General, Lars Otte, is responsible for business.
