Christina Bergmann has collected over 1.5 million euros for children's cancer aid.

Even after her death, volunteers continue to collect.

And need help

Wolfratshausen - She was a mainstay for children's cancer aid.

For over 30 years, Christina Bergmann collected donations on behalf of the charitable foundation named after her.

By the time she died in April last year, the woman from Wolfratshausen had collected around 1.5 million euros.

The foundation's work will continue even after the figurehead's death.

After Bergmann died in 2023 at the age of 95, Anneliese Meinl took over as chairwoman.

The woman from Wolfratshausen didn’t need much training: “I’ve been helping Christina Bergmann for 25 years,” says Meinl.

You can read all the news from Wolfratshausen here.

They looked for donations together, sold calendars year after year during Advent on Marienplatz in Wolfratshausen to generate income and went to markets together to promote the foundation.

Meinl now shoulders a large part of the tasks with a few colleagues, for example the stand at the Wolfratshausen Christmas market.

“But we don’t go to the markets anymore.

“It’s too tiring for me alone,” she says.

Meinl is absolutely convinced of the matter.

“I enjoy it a lot – and I know that I’m doing something worthwhile.” In the decades of commitment of the foundation, founded by Christina Bergmann in 1997, a total of over 1.5 million euros were raised for children’s cancer aid and research.

For example, by selling calendars, Christmas cards and tags and wrapping paper.

And of course through direct donations to the foundation.

The Eglinger Gleggä Club recently handed over 500 euros to Meinl.

The volunteers raised money at the club's St. Nicholas campaign in the Eglinger municipality.

“Whatever is left at the end we give to charitable institutions,” explained Josef Bail when handing over the donation.

The club has often donated to the Bergmann Foundation: “We know that this supports meaningful work,” said Gleggä club boss Hans Loth.

“Scientists are currently trying to find the reasons why some children are born with cancer,” says Meinl.

The foundation works very closely with the Haunerschen Children's Clinic and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

The university provides information about its cooperation with the foundation on its website.

“Basic research in the field of hematology and oncology as well as clinical research should be funded,” i.e. studies that are intended to enable improved diagnostics and treatment planning for children with cancer.

Successor sought for Bergmann Foundation: Younger colleagues should lead the club

Meinl hopes that this will be possible for a long time.

“But I haven’t been one of the young people for a long time,” says the woman from Wolfratshausen.

“We are urgently looking for someone younger who would like to get involved and whom we can introduce to the work of the foundation.” At the end of last year it looked as if there was a candidate.

Having recently retired, the man wanted to get involved - “but unfortunately nothing came of it,” Meinl regrets.

So she carries on for the time being, based on Christina Bergmann's life motto.

“As long as God lets me, I will carry on,” the former teacher always said about her commitment.

Meinl hopes to be able to share the work with volunteers.

The commitment is far too important to let it fall asleep.

Meinl also knew that when Bergmann died in April 2023.

“It was clear to me that the foundation had to continue.” Her opinion has not changed.
