The CDU wants to reform basic security.

This would also affect 1.9 million minors.

“Children are not just unemployed and have to get out of the citizen’s benefit,” demands VdK President Verena Bentele.

Basic child security is needed to help families affected by poverty.

However, responsibility for this cannot remain in the job centers if the children are not among the recipients of citizen's benefit.

According to figures from the Federal Employment Agency, there are around 5.5 million citizens' benefit recipients living in Germany who are entitled to benefits.

A total of 1.9 million children live in families that receive citizen's benefit.

This means that 7.4 million people are dependent on citizens' money - one in four of whom is a child.

“Children are not just appendages of their parents, but also need tailored support,” says Bentele.

“A reform that ignores this does not deserve the name, costs and effort.”

Citizens' allowance too high?

CDU wants to present new reform

CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann said in a podcast on Table.Media on January 31, 2024 that he would ideally like to abolish citizens' money in its current form and present a reform in mid-March.

Hundreds of thousands of people would take advantage of the system.

Above all, the increase in citizens' allowance by 61 euros to 563 euros per month, which has been in effect since 2024, is disrupting his party.

The Union (CDU/CSU) repeatedly criticizes that the citizens' allowance is too high.

A woman tested this and came to the conclusion: “It was sufficient for me, but it definitely doesn’t allow for big jumps.” She is also single and has no children.
