Senate Speaker Ignazio La Russa, a member of Premier Giorgia Meloni's rightwing Brothers of Italy(FdI) party who has previously dodged questions about being anantifascist and who owns a bust of Mussolini, on Friday said hewas defending antifascist militant Ilaria Salis overcontroversial detention conditions in Hungary because theessential question was one of protecting her human rights.
Speaking after meeting Salis's father Roberto, La Russa said"Beyond the merits of the trial on which I cannot of course say anything, I strongly express my opinion on the girl's right to dignity in the display of the famous chains, which exist in many countries and partly also in Italy," referring to Salis being led into court on a chain and with her hands and ankles cuffed for a trial where she is charged with attacking two neoNazis on February 10 last year.
"The important thing is that there is no glorying in the display of the ways in which security is ensured".
Asked if, given his neo-Fascist past di lui, he was now defending an anti-fascist militant, La Russa replied "yes, because it has nothing to do with the merits of the case", which center on the woman's human rights di lei ..
